Stirring It Up with Molly Ivins By Ellen Sweets Buy It Now |
By F. Martin Ramin for The Wall Street Journal
Although known as a fiery Texan newspaper columnist, the late Molly Ivins was also a formidable cook. Ellen Sweets, her fellow reporter and kitchen intimate, reveals the culinary side of the Lone Star legend in "Stirring It Up With Molly Ivins: A Memoir With Recipes" (University of Texas Press, $20). A whiz with a whisk and French cuisine connoisseur, Ms. Ivins honed her skills as the consummate dinner-party host. Ms. Sweets's anecdotes about the cast of characters who round-tabled Ms. Ivins's home are as satisfying as the Texas pistol's concoctions. No food snob, however, she was equally content to whip up a Garbage Gumbo as a duck a l'orange.
